Lufthansa Airlines

History

  • Foundation and Expansion

Officially known as Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Lufthansa Airlines is one of the biggest airlines in the world and the largest Airline in Germany. Its history stretches back to 1926, and since then, it has significantly contributed to the growth of commercial aviation domestically and abroad in Germany. The two German airlines, Deutscher Aero Lloyd and Junkers Luftverkehr, were combined to form Lufthansa on January 6, 1926.

It began its first operations on April 6, 1926, and initially concentrated on offering domestic flights within Germany. Over time, Lufthansa increased the number of overseas locations in its network. In the 1930s, Lufthansa increased its service areas to include South America, the Middle East, and several European nations. However, when World War II broke out, Lufthansa’s operations were severely hampered, and the company’s planes were commandeered for military use.

  • Re-establishment of the Airline

Following the end of World War II, Lufthansa was formally revived in 1953. The Airline resumed operations, initially focusing on domestic travel before gradually expanding its offers to include international destinations. Lufthansa introduced the Boeing 707 and other jet-powered aircraft, making long-distance travel more efficient and productive. Lufthansa went through a substantial phase of expansion and modernization in 1970. The Airline introduced wide-body aircraft, such as the Boeing 747 and the Airbus A300, to increase capacity and provide long-haul flights.

In 1997, as a founding member, Lufthansa joined the world’s largest airline alliance, Star Alliance. Now it owns and operates various airlines, including Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Lufthansa purchased several airlines, including a stake in Brussels Airlines, British Midland Airways (BMI), and Swissair’s successor Swiss International Air Lines. In recent years it has invested in brand-new aircraft, including the Boeing 747-8 and the Airbus A380, as well as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X of the next generation.
